Dinesh Phadnis, famous for his role as Fredericks in the long-running Indian TV show CID, died Monday night in Mumbai. He was 57.
He had been in the hospital for a few days and his health worsened rapidly. Despite being on a ventilator, he didn’t make it.
Phadnis was known for playing the intelligent and funny police officer Fredericks, a senior inspector in the CID team.
He had been on the show since it started in 1998 and was well-known across India.
His death has left a gap in the Indian TV industry and his fans are grieving.

Dayanand Shetty, who played ACP Pradyuman in CID, said, Dinesh was a close friend and coworker.
I’m shocked and saddened by his sudden death. He will be greatly missed.
Fredericks was not just a character but a symbol, said Shivaji Satam, who portrayed Daya in CID.
Dinesh made him real with his humor, charisma, and smarts. We’ve lost a great person today.
Phadnis left behind his wife and two kids. They held his funeral on Tuesday afternoon.
